RADIO REPORT: Rep. Vicki Kraft introduces school-choice scholarship legislation
A Vancouver lawmaker wants to let parents decide where their children attend school. John Sattgast reports.
SATTGAST: Republican State Representative Vicki Kraft says parents should have the ability to choose the learning environment that best meets their children's needs. She has introduced legislation that would establish the K-through-12 Education Scholarship Program in Washington state.
Under the program, parents could be awarded up to seven-thousand-dollars per student each school year to be used for costs related to private school or homeschool instruction.
KRAFT: “There are different learning needs of different children. This bill will allow parents to be able to provide the best learning environment for their child.”
SATTGAST: Kraft notes that more than 32-thousand Washington families have pulled their children out of the public-school system within the past year, because traditional zip-code assigned schools are not working for them. House Bill 1215 has been referred to the House Education Committee for consideration.
